I think that comment about putting yourself in the shoes of an industry gatekeeper and what their first impression of you is, is super important.

To take that a step further, even if you are an artist that already has a decent number of streams, think about what you can do to easily showcase to the industry that you also have people caring about you. That could be as simple as having an Instagram Broadcast channel, linking to a mailing list to sign-up, and frequently posting content that is designed to engage your audience. This will help them to understand that you are actively investing in building an audience that is willing to show up for you. And your hard mailing list data (or SMS list data) is the best key to opportunities.

IMO: artists shouldn't care about this. The entire socialmedia landscape is a broken system. Why put time, effort and money (!) into a black hole when Big Tech platforms (Spotify) pay pennies on a dime? It's like you're putting yourself in a hamster treadmill; you aint going nowhere, burning out and going broke. Bullocks to this i say, time is better spend doing stuff you like, stuff that inspires you, that makes you tick, make music. If enough artists would do this, then change will come and gatekeepers will take note. I refuse to play by these stupid rules and will accept the (temporary?) consequences gladly.
