I'm firmly in the camp of once a song is published the writer relinquishes ownership for its meaning - the transmission of a song is a two street - without the subjective interpretation of the listener there can be no connection. Bob Dylan described in “Chronicles” how this was taken to the extreme with his songs with people vandalizing his house and attacking him for not living up to their interpretation of his songs. Plus the Weathermen that took their name from “Subterranean Homesick Blues” and thus made him look aligned with their views/actions while all he wanted was to be left alone.
