Smart password sharing keeps artist teams connected and secure.

Let’s dive into today’s topic:
Safely sharing passwords within artist teams
Artists must protect their digital assets whilst enabling team collaboration.
Why it matters
Artists collaborate with numerous team members who require platform access: managers, marketers, booking agents, and sometimes venues.
Social media platforms represent valuable assets for artists. Losing access to TikTok or Instagram means potentially losing connection with their fanbase (pro tip: build a newsletter).
Numerous artists have fallen victim to hacking and lost access to their social media accounts. Understanding how to share passwords safely is, therefore, extremely valuable for protecting digital presence.

How it works
These are my best practices for secure password management within artist teams:
Avoid password sharing when possible. Many platforms offer user management features. For example, Meta's Business Suite allows artists to add individual users without sharing passwords. Team members can be easily added or removed as needed.
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) everywhere. This adds an essential security layer that significantly reduces the risk of hacking.
Use a password manager for storage. Tools like 1Password securely store both passwords and 2FA codes. Let the password manager generate randomised, strong passwords rather than creating memorable ones.
Share passwords exclusively through the password manager. Never send passwords via email, text, or messaging apps.
Update passwords regularly during team changes. Change passwords after each album campaign, festival edition, tour, or whenever team composition shifts.
Yes, but..
Password managers themselves can be vulnerable. LastPass experienced a significant breach, highlighting that no system is entirely foolproof.
These are my best practices rather than expert security advice. Established artists and management agencies could consider consulting cybersecurity professionals for comprehensive protection strategies.
Take action now
Artists who are not yet using two-factor authentication (2FA) and password managers should implement these security measures immediately. The investment in proper password management far outweighs the risk of losing access to the platform.
Your thoughts
I have removed the poll for this week as I’m not comfortable asking for your password management details. :) Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, but please be mindful of the information you share publicly, considering this topic of password safety.
