How artists can regain control over their marketing efforts
A three-step approach of focus, fun, and consistency.
Why it matters
Navigating the complex landscape of marketing demands can be overwhelming for artists. Labels push for TikTok posts, marketing gurus advocate for ads, and the constant comparison with peers can be disheartening.
Despite artists pouring efforts into marketing, results might not always match expectations, leading to stress and potential burnout. Mental health is an important subject in the music industry, with influential conferences like this week’s ESNS dedicating a significant portion of their program to safety and mental health (26 sessions in the current edition).
For artists pursuing a sustainable career, regaining and maintaining control over their brand and marketing efforts is paramount.
How it works
Here’s a three-step strategy for artists to structure their marketing efforts and overcome overwhelm:
Step 1: Focus. It’s better to do one thing well than many things mediocrely. Artists should concentrate on one aspect at a time, be it a specific metric, social media platform, or content format. Master it before adding new actions.
Step 2: Have fun. Content creation should be enjoyable. If artists don’t find joy in their creations, it reflects in the content. Fans connect better when artists genuinely relish the creative process. Find a format that sparks joy.
Step 3: Be consistent. One social media post is not a campaign. Artists should create content consistently, whether three times a day (like many TikTok creators) or once weekly (like this newsletter). Find a rhythm that works while considering the previous steps.
Yes, but..
Please note I’m not a mental health expert. I just like to give artists a fresh perspective on managing their marketing and branding endeavours.
Take action now
Artists feeling overwhelmed should take back control by pausing and reevaluating. Eliminate tasks that don’t bring joy and invest the reclaimed time into a focused, enjoyable, and consistent content format.
